Showing up in blouses,skirts,pants and scarves you have many options to choose from. The bottom line – Plaid shirts won’t die, they only continue to evolve. I have found some interesting facts and history about plaid and how it became so popular. Let’s start with the origin of plaid. The difference between plaid and tartan. Tartan refers to the unique cloth patterns which distinguish one Scottish clan or geographical region from another. It is a pattern consisting of criss crossed horizontal bands in multiple colors. It originated in woven wool but now are made in many other materials Plaid was a celtic kilt or blanket which served as an outer layer to battle the Highland elements. In 1746-Tartan Plaid was banned by the British for four decades after the Scottish Rebellion. In 1782 the print resurfaced again and became popular to wear to formal events. In 1850, the distinctive red and black Buffalo checkered plaid became a staple amongst those in outdoor professions. 1914, Paul Bunyan, a lumberjack folk hero known for wearing the plaid shirt has been immortalized in cartoons,statues,trails, and theme parks. 1963, The Beach Boys make the Pendleton plaid shirt famous by wearing it holding a surfboard on the album “Surfer Girl.” 1979, “The Dukes of Hazzard” aired on CBS. Guys loved Daisy Duke in her cut off jean shorts and plaid shirt so much that they started requesting that their wives and girlfriends wear the plaid shirts.
The 1980’s were a pivotal decade for plaid, plaid was in a preppy stronghold for some while at the same time the grunge movement was taking form in the Pacific Northwest, making this decade the most notorious one yet. In the early 1990’s the plaid shirt became the unofficial symbol of the grunge movement. 2010, the Olympic uniforms for the snowboarding team featured Gore-Tex jackets that looked like plaid shirts. Today’s plaid is a bit of the maverick pattern. The popularity of plaid has had its ups and downs but its doubtful the trend will ever go out of style. Plaid will always be seen as the symbol against society. In recent years, it has come back with a vengeance with both hipsters and mainstream fashion. Plaid shirts have become a wardrobe mainstay for many of us, and this garment has had quite the journey to get to where it is today. What type of plaid are you? Here are the six most popular plaids, Tartan,Tattersall,Windowpane Check,Madras,Gingham and the Glen plaid. I am styling some of my favorite plaids with faded blue jeans, mixing up how to wear them and offering some different shoe options depending on your mood. This is an easy way to usher in fall with lightweight fabrics and faded denim. Later in the season you can layer under a sweater or jacket as the weather gets cooler. Bring on the fall temps and ~ Get your Plaid on!

Some mornings you will need a light weight sweater on your walk. I like to wear subtle colors on my walk so that I blend into nature around me and often times go unnoticed by a group of deer grazing on foliage in the woods.
