Welcome to Hawaii Part Two… If you are just joining me, I encourage you to visit the previous Hawaii post to see the breathtaking Napali coast line. This part of the story will take us a little inland for some fun activities. First on the list, hiking the Hanakapiai Trail. This trail starts at the end of the road that runs thru the town of Hanalei. You will want to stop here and pick up plenty of water and some snacks for your hike. You can buy a small backpack and a hiking stick(s) which I strongly recommend. Make sure you are wearing good hiking shoes that perform in wet conditions. Sunscreen, lip balm and bug spray before you get started will make your hike more pleasant. I also highly recommend you take an anti inflammatory before the hike and carry it with you. A small first aid kit is a good idea as well. The length of the hike is optional and can be tailored to your comfort level and experience. The 2 mile option will take you just across a river and onto a beach. There are restrooms here and a lot of people, probably most tourists will turn back and hike the 2 miles out. Since we had been to this Island before and had hiked to the beach on our first trip we planned to go 4 miles in this time taking us to the 500 foot waterfall. A great payoff at the end but not your normal flat or even just elevated hike. We experienced climbing over slippery, muddy and wet boulders and rock fragments that lead along a 3foot wide trail. On one side was a dense, tropical forest and the other was a drop off to the river below. Beautiful views along the way but a little scary at times on a wet surface. Be prepared to cross the river several times in knee high water and watch out for rising water. My intention is not to scare you but to educate you. Get your camera ready! Have a safe and fun adventure!  Keep reading for the details and photos from my hiking adventure.

Hanakapiai Trail

The first 2 mile section looked like this nearly all the way to the beach. Breathtaking views and great photo opportunities for you to enjoy.  Allow enough time to get in and out well before dark regardless which trail length you choose. It’s not a bad idea to add in some extra time in case of an injury that might slow you down.

The second 2 mile stretch starts out like this and then…

Hanakapiai Trailcuts thru this huge cluster of bamboo… The boulders get bigger, muddier and more slippery here.

Hanakapiai Trail

In some areas of the trail there are only rocks and boulders to climb over… Be careful! It’s easy to lose your footing. this is where that walking stick would have come in handy! (The one I wish I had).
