My weekend started with a flight to Charleston to visit my son, then a 4 hour drive up I-26 gave me a chance to do some hiking in North Carolina.

Breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge mountains, named for the blue color that appears when the sky is hazy, energizes my soul. Hiking trails leading me to places unknown bring the peace I yearn for, with mountain air filling my lungs and nature’s silence calming me. The sounds of nature aid in my relaxation and give me the much needed emotional rest I seek. Here I am able to clear my head of life’s demands and the mundane activity that occupies my days.

Before we start I want to share some of the things I have learned about the Blue Ridge Mountains. I always love to share the facts of my destinations along with my personal experiences.

Hiking North Carolina will take you in and around  The Blue Ridge Mountains which are noted for having a bluish color when seen from a distance. Trees put the “blue” in Blue Ridge, from the isoprene released into the atmosphere which contributes to the characteristic haze on the mountains and their distinctive color. You can see it here in this photo I took along my hike.

In the photo below you can see the trail we hiked taking us from  one mountain top to another. We hiked in 2 miles along the Art Loeb trail in hopes of reaching Shining rock at the 4 mile mark. Plans changed when we met up with a hiker telling us of his close encounter with a big black bear that ran in front of him, crossing his path. Not Equipped with bear spray, I was not willing to go any further, my husband was disappointed but he knew not to push. I can be a bit of a bear myself, and everyone knows not to mess with mama bear! Haha! Shining Rock will still be there when we make it back in September and we will be properly equipped next time.

The photo below of Tennent Mountain at 6,040 ft. is halfway to shining rock on the Art Loeb trail. Views from the top are spectacular.  A great stopping point to sit and take in natures beauty all around… Views are 360 degrees. At the bottom of the climb I felt like I was in a bowl and about the size of an ant!

At the end of the day we had hiked several trails and climbed a total of 73 floors. Physically exhaustion contrasted our excitement of where we were and what we experienced today. My advice, hike with someone you enjoy spending time with and do it as often as you can! Happy Trails to you….
